Why most “redacted” PDFs are not really redacted

Drawing a black box over text is the most common way people redact a PDF, and it is also the most dangerous. The box is just another shape on the page. The words underneath stay in the file and can be copied, searched and extracted in seconds. This is called cosmetic redaction, and it has exposed secrets in court cases, government releases and company contracts.

True redaction deletes the underlying content. TrueRedact opens the PDF structure in your browser, removes the text under every box, burns the box into the page and double-checks the result with a second PDF engine. When a page contains something that cannot be edited safely, such as a scanned image, it is flattened into pixels instead.

Your files never leave your device

Online redaction sites ask you to upload the very document you are trying to protect. TrueRedact has no upload form, no backend and no API. Your file is read into browser memory, processed with open-source libraries (pdf-lib, pdf.js and exifr) and returned as a download. Open your browser's Network tab and watch: zero requests. After your first visit the tools even work offline.
