Why overlay is not enough
Blacking out text in a PDF editor usually just stacks a dark shape on top of the words. The words are still there. Paste the page into a text editor, drag a selection across the black bar, or open the file in a viewer that ignores the overlay and the hidden text appears. Vector artwork such as signatures, stamps and chart labels can be recovered the same way, because the drawing instructions are still in the file.
The Vector Text Blackout tool goes further than a simple overlay. For every zone you draw it removes the glyphs from the text layer, deletes small vector paths and strokes that fall inside the zone, drops annotations that sit under it, and discards fonts that are no longer used on the page before saving. Large background shapes are kept so your layout does not collapse. Everything happens locally in browser memory using pdf-lib and pdf.js, so the document never leaves your device.
How to use Vector Text Blackout in 3 steps
- Upload your PDF by dragging it into the drop zone. The first page is rendered in your browser for preview.
- Drag rectangles over the text, signatures or drawings you want gone. Navigate between pages and adjust or delete boxes until the page looks right.
- Click "Black Out & Download". The report lists how many characters, vector paths and fonts were removed and confirms the independent check passed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between this and the True PDF Redactor?
Both delete hidden text. This tool also removes vector drawing paths that fall inside your zones, prunes fonts that are no longer referenced on the page and strips more document structure. Use it for signatures, stamps, logos drawn as vectors and charts as well as plain text.
Can someone recover the text by removing the black rectangle?
No. The rectangle is burned in after the text and paths beneath it are already deleted from the file, so there is nothing left to uncover. Deleting the rectangle would only reveal blank space.
Why was a page turned into an image?
If a zone overlaps a scanned image, an embedded object or text in an unsupported writing mode, editing it safely is not possible. In that case TrueRedact renders the page to pixels with the boxes burned in. This is the strongest option, and the report tells you exactly which pages were converted and why.
