Why true redaction matters

Most people "redact" a PDF by drawing a black rectangle over the sensitive part and saving. That is cosmetic redaction, and it fails: the original text is still inside the file, so anyone can select it, copy it, or run a text extractor and read the very numbers you tried to hide. Court filings, government releases and corporate contracts have all leaked this way. A redaction is only real when the underlying characters are physically removed from the document.

Is the text under the black boxes really deleted?

Yes. The engine removes the characters from the page's content stream, not just from view. It then re-reads the output with a different PDF parser to confirm that no text remains in the boxed areas. If a page contains an image or object that cannot be edited safely, that page is converted to a flat picture with the boxes burned in, which also leaves nothing to recover.

Does my PDF get uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read into your browser's memory, processed with JavaScript and handed back as a download. There is no server, no API and no storage. Open your browser's Network tab while using the tool and you will see zero requests.

Will the redacted PDF still be searchable?

Yes for pages that can be edited at content level - all untouched text stays selectable and searchable. Pages that must be flattened to an image for safety (or when you choose maximum-security mode) lose their text layer, which is the price of a guaranteed redaction.
